Top 5 Questions That We Hear From Patients

How do I care for my VFORCE FLEX BACK BRACE?

No special maintenance is required.

  • By laying the brace on a flat surface, remove the (3 to 4) plastic disks from the waist panel. Then flip the brace over and open the mesh back panel piece, remove the back panel and slip the cover off. Before washing make sure all velcro is in locked down position. (this will prevent any snagging).
  • Hand wash or machine wash (gentle cycle only) in warm water.
  • Wash separately, do not use bleach or chlorine products.
  • Mild detergent and a fabric softener only. Use extra spin cycle to remove excess water.
  • Hang to dry or use dryer on medium heat. (make sure all velcro is locked in place to prevent sagging).
  • When dry re-insert panels and brace is ready to wear.

What is the best position to sleep or rest?

Studies have shown that the least amount of pressure on the low back occurs when one lies on his or her back with the hips and knees bent.

When sleeping, try lying on your back with pillows propped under your knees. You may adjust the number of pillows you use according to what feels comfortable. It is not recommended that you lie on your stomach when sleeping or resting. This produces increased low back pressure and may cause discomfort. Some people find that lying on your side provides a very comfortable sleeping position. If you find that this position is good for you then place a pillow between your knees, keep your knees and hips bent, and use a pillow just large enough to keep your neck aligned with your spine. When using pillows for your head, be sure that the pillows are firm enough to provide ample support and allow your head and neck to align with your spine.

Too many pillows or a pillow that is too small will cause added stress to the spine. When lying on your back, you may benefit from the use of a small roll beneath your neck. This lends additional support and decreases the pressure on your neck. Ultimately, let comfort be your guide. Provided that good body mechanics are kept in mind, find a position that allows you to sleep with minimal symptoms and use it.

What about Hot/Cold therapy?

Cold therapy is often used immediately following an injury or activity and for at least 48 hours thereafter. Hot therapy is often NOT used for a 48-72 hour time period after injury unless specifically indicated by a health care practitioner and is typically used for longer term, chronic issues. Both hot and cold therapy are typically applied for 15-20 minutes and can be repeated every 1-2 hours. As always, be sure to consult with your health care specialist regarding your specific injury and the indicated treatment solution.

What about exercise?

Stabilization, balance, and postural exercises chosen by the clinician should begin as recommended by your therapist or doctor. As the difficulty subsides and trunk control increases, exercise should be done without the brace. Functional activities and activities of daily living follow as the patient nears discharge.
